Reviews

A direct word from God for today!  Pertinent, Punchy, and Powerful!

This book is a word for here and now. God has called His people to step outside of the church building and into their community. David writes with refreshing honesty and encouragement. God has given him such revelation through scriptures not often taught this way - revelation that penetrates to your heart and fills you with passion to see God’s church break free from religion and become what He always planned! God is sweeping across the earth to make evangelism natural and powerful - this book is part of that movement. I would encourage anybody to read it - it is pertinent, punchy and powerful!

A challenge and encouragement at the same time.

Great read. Powerful book. I found myself in tears several times by the authenticity of the author and the hope he shares.

It’s a wake up call to the church about those who are slipping through the cracks unnoticed both outside and inside the church. Even those who have been involved in real ministry for years.

Howell bases his observations on scripture. He also shares many real life stories of how God intervened in rescuing the “falling”. You’ll be inspired as you hear accounts of how God still speaks and intimately cares about our unique needs.

If you or someone you know has slowly, quietly drifted away from the church from being hurt you’ll enjoy this book. Its an encouragement to get our safety zone and into God’s. It’s a fairly quick read, but I couldn’t put it down.

The perfect book for our Society Today

David Howell captures exactly what Christians need to hear today. There is a lot going on in 2020: Covid-19, Racial Tensions, and a Recession. This book really focuses on the Church and it's followers. I encourage you to check it out and apply the lessons learned from the Man in the Window to your life and to your church. It is time for ALL churches to turn outward! Love your city, Love your state, and Love your country... and all of the people inside of it!

A challenge to join Jesus in the streets of your city

I was definitely challenged by “The Man in The Window.” What a timely heart check for believers.

David is transparent about some of his own failures, and I definitely see myself in his stories as well. I know I sometimes find I’ve grown “comfortable” in my level of service and care for these people, both inside and outside the church, who our Lord loves so much. In seasons like that, this is just the kind of nudge I need. I think others will find themselves blessed by this book too!

Take notice of the man in the window

I’m a Christian, and I’m in full time ministry as a Church leader. I’ve read a lot of Christian books. There is a tendency, especially amongst the mega Church leaders, to turn a sermon into a book when it really should have stayed as a sermon. That’s not the case here. This did start with a sermon, but he’s written a book about life, about following God, and about Church - it’s for anyone who knows Jesus and wants to follow him.

I met David on a mission trip 4 or 5 years back, and I’ve known his Church over the years. I have the utmost respect for their genuine passion for Jesus and for the lost and hurting. There’s an authenticity amongst them, and maybe that led me to ask whether I could read a pre-release copy. I’m very pleased I did.

I hope you read this book. I think you will find it as encouraging and life-filled as I did. For some it’s a timely reminder, for others this could really be life changing.

Loved this book.

Inside the church I've found a family, a support system, help during problems and crisis, discipleship and teaching, people to love and worship with, lifting Christ at the center of it all. Everyone needs the church, but many will never come into a building for many reasons. Many will come and leave. This book says what needs to be said; that this richness is meant to be shared with the world, not just held within the walls of a church building on Sunday and Wednesdays. And one doesn't have to be on a missions team in a far flung country to share it. David gives testimony to what amazing things can happen when we change our mindsets and look outward beyond our church meetings and open our hearts to share an encounter with our great Father with people we encounter everyday. His testimonies show how we can posture ourselves to allow the Holy Spirit to reach people through us in our everyday life, if we are willing.

David beautifully weaves his own experiences throughout the book leaving you inspired, touched and convinced of this message...convinced that you can do it too.

Thought Provoking and Relatable

I dove into this book and read through it in one sitting. Will I go back and find things I missed? Definitely. The lesson is simple. Look beyond our circle and comfort zone to find the people who need us most. An unintended consequence was myself realizing I’ve been edging toward the window (or taking a step back) with all that is going on in the world and watching others dive in to reach those God has called us all to serve. The story is brought to life by the author’s own accounts of personal experiences and practicing what he teaches. This book was enlightening and thought provoking. I will definitely be sharing this with others.

I'm Glad I read it!

This book comes as a passionate plea for Christians to look beyond the walls of the church to reach a hurting, dying world. Drawing from his own experiences and the story of Eutychus, the author explores the pitfalls of complacency and lovingly points out the failures of the “Me Culture” infecting our churches today. Along the way he also intertwines a story of healing and redemption, and how we are never too far away for the love of God to reach us. It is a short, simple book, but there is no doubt it is the author’s heart.

Very Timely Word

This was an easy read written from a personal point of view. The author laid open the passage from scripture and gave very applicable content for everyone. This is a timely message that opened my eyes and heart to the "man in the window" and encouraged and challenged me to evaluate my current practices as a Christian. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone in search of growing in their faith. Great book.

A very relevant and powerful message

As a man who has repeatedly moved toward the window, I appreciate this book and its very straightforward message a great deal. How many times I've heard, "we need to get them to church," and "I'll keep praying for that," when God has placed us here to be used. God has used David to deliver a fundamental truth: Jesus came to start a movement and we're admonished to meet people where they are. I love this book.

A wake up call to the Western Church

In his first book, David Howell distills the wisdom of a life that ranges from the financial sector, to the church pulpit, to the local laundromat. His message to the American Church is a call to acknowledge the people that have become invisible, considered by society to be less worthy, and show them the love of Christ. It is a call to turn our focus away from ourselves and toward those in need, to move from the comfort of our church pews to the adventure of being the hands and feet of Jesus to a hurting world. It is also a call to reach out to those in our churches who are heading out the back door and to love our church family no matter what their life may look like. If you are looking for an example of how to put your faith into action, take the time to read The Man in the Window.

A good book, by a good man.

In today's world there are many resources available to the Church. All of us want more than just a good resource, we want a good resource from someone that we trust, a trusted resource. David Howell is such a man. Having served on the same church staff with David for three years, I can affirm that he lives what he writes in the Man in the Window. This book is a "now" word, speaking to the Church at this season of time. Read it!

Encouraging and Motivational

In his book, David Howell, reminds us of what the Gospel of Jesus looks like. It's not just supposed to be theory and theology but it has real world impact. This book really inspired me and challenged me to look around in everyday life to see who God might want to talk to today and then to trust that He will speak a word of life to that person. David is the real deal. He shares his personal experience in blessing those outside of the four walls of the church. Thanks for the reminder and the practical encouragement of how to hear and follow God to love like Jesus in our world today!

A very powerful experience

“The Man in the Window” by David J. Howell is an inspirational read that draws upon scripture and illustrates perfectly the current state of the modern-day church. My favorite chapter is “When Life Gets Uncomfortable”, what a powerful message the “One Rainy Night” story is! I hope that this read impacts you as much as it impacted me.

Be encouraged and equipped to the lost found

If you want to see the lost found and recapture Jesus’s heart for people then this book will both encourage and equip you. In these days I believe it’s going to take us all embracing this call and this book reminds us that all of us are called into this commission!

Don't just go to church, be the church everywhere you go

Great book! Very appropriate for the time in which we live. It stirred in me memories of the zeal we had flowing out of the movement at Tech during the 70’s. It’s time for us to get out of the box we call church and remember that we are the church. It’s time for us to quit waiting for the lost and hurting to come to us and go out and find them. For me personally, I was comforted by the closure that came from hearing the rest of the story about his parents of whom I have often wondered. Reading this book will encourage and motivate you to take action to bring the love of God to those around you.

A timely and practical word for the church.

David clearly has a heart for the church to take seriously the charge to watch over one another in love and shares sensitively his own experiences illustrating the need for this. It is so easy to become complacent and for people to slip through the cracks, or as he says 'out of the window'. He also compellingly urges the church to leave the safety of its walls and seek those who have already fallen away, however uncomfortable that may be, to get alongside them where they are and enable them to encounter or re-encounter God. A timely encouragement for those with a heart for the lost, the least and the lonely and God's church.
